Dental Inlays and Onlays

Classified somewhere between a dental filling and a full crown, inlays and onlays can heal a damaged tooth. Used on the back teeth, an inlay covers the indented middle of a tooth and onlays cover the tooth’s upper, rounded edges. Like dental crowns and fillings, onlays and inlays can be created in several materials — composite resin, metal, and porcelain. Licensed dentists Dr. Alan Howard and Dr. Yonatan Howard help Encino, CA patients understand tooth-colored fillings, crowns, onlays, and inlays before they make a decision about how to best treat their teeth. At The Dental Office Encino, we have the latest dental equipment including CEREC restoration technology so you can have a custom inlay or onlay made and placed in one appointment.

"First time patient here! The moment I walked through the front doors, I felt like I was in an alternate reality. Literally 5 different employees greeted me one right after the other. I have never felt more welcome anywhere in my life. "What IS this place?" I thought to myself. I sat in the waiting area next to the fish tank and enjoyed watching the fish swim around while I waited. A few moments later, I was brought back into the back of the office and to the chair where my cleaning would take place. Rachel took amazing care of me! She noted that they had Netflix and Hulu if I wanted to watch anything during my cleaning and mentioned that the chair had a massage feature if I wanted to use it. Wait, was I at the dentist or the Ritz Carlton? Whaaa? The office was so clean and organized I was overall just so impressed. Each dental patient is in their own area, but the areas are not walled off. So it’s private enough, but you might hear someone else talking to the dentist about a hole in their mouth (true story). I cannot sing Rachel’s praises enough. She explained everything SO thoroughly and really took her time during my cleaning. I thought it was really cool that they include an oral cancer screening during the exam, I had never had that done before! After my cleaning, I was able to meet Dr. Howard and Yoni (also Dr. Howard), the father and son that run the business. They are SO nice and attentive. They were fantastic with breaking down everything on my xrays and explaining what was going on in terms I could understand. I even went home with a little goodie bag that included a cute branded chapstick. After the appointment, one of the receptionists walked me through my bill/estimates for future appointments in this fancy private conference room. I’m telling you, I almost felt like I was at a spa. I’m coming back for sure!"

An onlay or inlay is a fantastic option when you’ve got a chipped tooth or a large cavity that’s too big to get filled, but does not require the full protection of a crown. At your dental exam, Dr. Alan or Yonatan Howard will examine your x-rays to determine the ideal procedure for your needs. If an onlay or inlay is chosen, he will explain the available materials that will best meet your needs. You could also talk about whether you’d like a direct restoration (an onlay or inlay created in our office using CEREC technology while you wait) versus an indirect restoration created in a dental lab.

After applying numbing cream or local anesthesia to your gums, Dr. Howard will begin by cleaning out regions of decay. Other techniques of sedation may be used in case you experience stress or a powerful gag reflex. When the enamel is cleaned, impressions will be produced from your tooth. If you’re getting a restoration made in a lab, a temporary cover will be set until it is prepared. As soon as your onlay or inlay is ready, Dr. Howard will carefully set and then bond it on your tooth. He will polish the borders or adjust the fit so that your tooth is properly covered and feels right.

If just local anesthesia is used, you will be able to leave following your appointment and get back to your regular activities. You might experience mild discomfort, swelling, or sensitivity for several days once your onlay or inlay is placed. Please call The Dental Office Encino if you experience any issues following your treatment. Your onlay or inlay should be taken care of like your own teeth with daily flossing and brushing. You should schedule yearly dental examinations and twice yearly cleanings at The Dental Office Encino so Dr. Howard can evaluate the wear and health of your onlay or inlay. With good maintenance, it ought to last for several years before it needs repairing or replacing.

Onlays and inlays are a common procedure for dental cavities and other problems, so it’s generally paid in part by insurance. We can talk to your insurer to ascertain your particular policy prior to figuring out your personal expenses. Dr. Howard can personalize your procedure with restoration materials to match your budget and needs. In your consultative appointment, Dr. Howard will discuss price quotes and payments we take, such as low-cost medical financing.

Regardless of whether you choose an onlay or inlay, metal or ceramic, indirect or direct, it is important to take care of a damaged tooth before it turns into a debilitating and costly issue.
